Here we work, in the dark and dusty cellars of Student Coaching, dressed in red and white scarves that not only protect us from the cold but now also proclaim our patriotism. There’s even hushed whispers that He Who Shall Not Be Named may even let us watch a match on television. Admittedly it’s ancient technology giving a grainy black and white picture but we believe that may be a good thing: echoes of the 1966 Cup Final. ‘They think it’s all over… it is now.’
For those of us who have a passion for the concept of coaching as an approach to transforming teaching and learning, there has been much discussion here about the coaching style that might be used on the England team. We worried there was a danger people might be confused about what coaching is. We were anxious no one watched the World Cup believing Mr Capello’s style of coaching was the only approach.
